Typewriter To Typography

Typewriters. Can you remember there typeface? Well, that old style of typing could be making a big style comeback!

Typography is a big part of Graphic Design, typography is used from the typeface on your newly designed, nice new shiny flyers all the way to grabbing people’s eye to draw them into reading an advert or taking notice of a product. Typography is everywhere, typeface is everywhere; yet in the last 24 hours how many times have you seen an advert with text? Well, some mathematical whiz; a genius has worked out that in the western world in 24 hours we will consume, and digest approximately 150 adverts a day. Now that is a lot!

The extent that Typography effects out everyday lives is on the increase, and now typography is becoming a bigger, and more powerful tool for designers as our friends at The Flyer Expert have noted. Typeface is having more of an influence too, gone are the days when an advert with ‘Comic Sans’ would have the same effect on a target audience as Microsoft’s new showcase: ‘Calibri’.  [For More Info Click Here.]

As the examples above show, fonts influence. However when a designer considers the typography to use, they also deliberate about the way that it is shown on screen, page, or pan-flit. Typography can take many forms, it can be the main aim, for example Amazon’s : ROCK advert, the advert is the image, and the image is the typography. In the 21st century the classic template of image, title, image caption and information, is long gone. They are now one under typography.

This example is in no-way; what advertising and typography has become,it is still a very right wing view of advertising; appealing to the more youthful, stereotyped open-minded, free spirit person in the target audience, and this type of advert is in no way practical for say a solicitor as the connotations of that field is not to have an open-mind, and to rely on hard facts.

Typography; Typeface and Advertising is developing at such a rate that long gone are the days of the typewriter, (unless its being used in a retro style graphic…), and this brings us full circle , on how the typewriter is digested, developed,exploited and developed on again until typography changes and evolves into the example above.

Typography is evolving into something that looks to be fascinating within the near future, and i for one cannot wait to reap the benefits and see the results.
